Troubleshooting
- Armature Overheating:
- Remove the overload and rewind or replace the armature if damaged
- Check for open-circuited, short-circuited or grounded armature coils
- Field Coil Overheating:
- Check for shorted, grounded or open field coils
- Ensure the blowers or external cooling systems remain in operation if the main field windings remain fully energized with the motor at standstill
- Excessive Load:
- Check the DC armature ampere input and compare it to the nameplate rating
- Reduce the load or replace the motor with one of greater capacity
- Jogging and Repeated Starts:
- Avoid frequent starting or jogging as this can reduce the life of the brushes and winding insulation
- Heating:
- Ensure proper ventilation and cooling
- Check for electrical causes such as excess current due to overload or over-voltage to the fields
- Thermostat:
- Check the thermostat connections and operation
